RESUMO

During the last decades, healthcare has undergone important changes. Increased life expectancy has given rise to an aging population that, according to the United Nations, is about to become one of the most important social transformations of the 21st century. Globally, there were 727 million people aged 65 or over in 2020 (9.3% of the total population) and this is estimated to increase to 16% by 2050 . In the European Union (EU), the percentage of the population aged 65 or over has increased from 9.6% in 1960 to 20.3% in 2019 and is projected to increase to 31.3% by 2100. We are also witnessing a process of aging of the elderly population, with a proportion of very old people (those aged 80 and over) in the total population of the European Union of 5.8% in 2019 . Spain is one of the countries with the highest proportion of older people, with a percentage of citizens aged 65 or over in 2020 of 19.6% of the total population, and with a projection of 26.5% for 2035. Almost a third of this population (6%) are 80 years or older.

EpiData is an epidemiological software developed by the EpiData Association (www.epidata.dk). Following the EpiInfo 6 philosophy, Epidata, offers all the advantages of EpiInfo 6: simplicity, applicability, few operation and communication system requirements, widening them with a clear focus on data quality and documentation plus the advantages that, for many users, has the Windows(R) operating system. The aim of this Note is to introduce to potential users the strengths and limitations of EpiData, a software that can become in a short time the equivalent to what EpiInfo 6 was a few years ago

(AU)

Background: In January 2000 the Public Health Service of Area 2, in the Region of Madrid, began to publish a weekly sheet on epidemiological and public health information (HISP) addressed to health professionals working in the Area. The aim of the present study was to estimate to how extend the "HISP" was known among health professionals of Area 2, and also to estimate the suitability and usefulness of its contents, during 2000. Methods: A postal survey was carried out among a random sample of professionals working in Area 2. A descriptive analysis of main variables was done, variables associated to the knowledge of the "HISP" were investigated. Epi Info 2000 program was used for the analysis. Results: The response rate was 79,7%. The best evaluated content was that related to epidemic outbreaks. An association between knowing the "HISP" and knowing the regional epidemiological bulletin (Boletín Epidemiológico de la Comunidad de Madrid) was found (OR=9,3, IC 95%=2,9-29,5), and also an association between knowing the "HISP" and being a physician (OR=4,3, IC: 1,5-12,6, p=0,005). Conclusions: The "HISP" has a good acceptance among health professionals of Area 2. They were more interested in contents related to stressful situations. It is necessary to improve the diffusion of information on public health among nursing professionals (AU)
